Adult Swim's Premier New Show of This Year Secures a Major Extension for Two More Seasons.

In October of last year, Adult Swim welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the network introduced a fresh animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, evoking a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. In an era often marked by dark humor, this show's sincerity found an audience and propelled it a surprise hit.

A Significant Investment

In mid-December, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The series follows three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.

"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."

Executive Acclaim

Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and championed its peculiarly charming style.

"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about observing this endearing family go about their simple existence.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to help comedy break out of its long-running layer of irony. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

What Comes Next

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well be part of that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to experience the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
