People have gathered across the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-conducted offensive on 7 October 2023, as talks advanced in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The attack saw over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others taken back to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.

Israel answered by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are considered accurate by the UN and other international bodies.

"The violent enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," the leader stated on that day.

He also promised to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the release of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will not create a risk to Israel".

Remembrance Events Across Israel

The Israeli government postponed state remembrance events until 16 October - after the end of the festive season - but gatherings still were held across the country on Tuesday.

A commemorative event for the loved ones of Israelis who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was held in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the families themselves, it was broadcast across Israeli television channels.

Some time earlier, a minute's silence was respected around the country.

Peace Discussions in Egypt

Simultaneously, Israeli and Hamas representatives met in the North African tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of indirect talks to discuss the conditions of the agreement.

A senior representative familiar with the negotiations indicated that an evening round of indirect talks started at 19:00 Cairo time.

The representative stated the morning session ended without concrete outcomes, amid conflicting views over the recommended Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not restart combat after the opening period of the arrangement.

He commented that the discussions are "difficult and have not yet produce any major advancement," but noted that facilitators are striving to close the disparities between the conflicting groups.

Critical Issues in Talks

  • An enduring truce
  • The trade of the hostages still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The removal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Measures for humanitarian aid distribution
  • After-conflict governance of the area

Citizen Reaction

In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square previously, young Hagar - whose sibling survived the assault on the gathering, where 378 people were lost their lives and numerous more were abducted by Hamas fighters - shared: "No location feels like home now and until each abducted person return none of us will feel safe."

"After we see all home returned, we can feel relief again. Then we can begin to rebuild," she added.

In front of the leader's official dwelling in the capital, people gathered to demonstrate their solidarity for the relatives of the abducted. Israel reports nearly fifty stay in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be alive.

Protester one woman stated: "We must do every compromise required for the captives to be released. But we sincerely need promises that we will be safe."

Research now regularly indicate that around the majority of the population want the war to finish in exchange for the release of the abducted.

Gaza Situation

At the area of Nova festival, mourners assembled to honor the dead.

From that location, the noise of aerial bombardments and artillery could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where observers reported the heavy Israeli shelling persisted.

In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were documented in the morning of that day in the western neighborhood, area and zone neighbourhoods and in the east side area of that sector, as well the camp to the northwestern area.

"When the dusk falls, the anxiety appears with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike earlier, described.

"Me and my three children are fearful of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, embracing, particularly my smallest child who places his head on me the entire evening."

"Constantly we monitor the news to see what happened. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be completed and that the war will come back to us."

Humanitarian Crisis

The medical facility in the urban area announced it had received the remains of half dozen people by the daytime, including a trio killed in an Israeli attack in the south part area.

A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of Khan Younis said two more fatalities had been brought there. An individual was died by Israeli troops while attempting to get aid to the south region, medics stated.
