New York Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after being shot in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”
It remained unclear when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “However, I can share, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and he expresses himself so positively.”
NYPD released security footage earlier this week of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack remains under investigation and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.
The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday about halfway between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The assailant escaped.
Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “a great deal” since he heard about the shooting. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a child.
“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd did not participate during the current season, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with a shoulder injury that required surgery.
He signed with New York as a free agent in spring and was anticipated to become a key part of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on August 2 and had to be helped off.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he attends every game. His commitment is total. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, from Texas, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of Texas University in 2019. He signed with Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
