New York's next mayor states plans to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion
New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from his rent-controlled apartment that sparked debate in his election bid.
A Traditional Abode
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central policy, hesitated to declare he would live there promptly after his victory in November.
"The choice was based on our family's safety and the need to dedicating my full attention on carrying out the agenda for affordability voters supported," Mamdani said in his announcement.
Thanking a Neighborhood
Mamdani lived in the Astoria neighbourhood, an area known for its diverse immigrant communities and global cuisine.
"To the people of Astoria: my gratitude for exemplifying the true spirit of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, Astoria will always live inside me and the work I do," he added.
Campaign Controversy
Throughout his campaign, Mamdani connected his central policy – halting rent increases – to his circumstances as a tenant.
But his rivals, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he hails from a prominent family.
Previous Exceptions
Some mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his private home on the Upper East Side during his three terms, which wrapped up in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it could serve as a space for civic gatherings, and pushed for significant upgrades of the historic mansion.
A Grand New Home
As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings very different than his humble Astoria digs.
With its butter yellow paint, green shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.
Inside, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished to reflect the home's original era.
The estate, which reportedly has several bedrooms, also includes increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
A number of people have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors occasionally opened and closed by themselves, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "No matter what anyone says," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
The Value of Rent Stabilization
The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, meaning the city sets limits on how much building managers can increase rent each year.
Tenants view rent-stabilized housing as essential protections as the housing expenses rises faster than the average income.
It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the average rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
