The ice cream brand's Co-Founder Alleges Parent Company Blocked Palestine-Themed Ice Cream Product
One of the co-founders behind the famous ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has stated that parent company the multinational conglomerate prevented the introduction of an innovative Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, that co-founded the company alongside his partner, disclosed how he will independently develop the controversial flavor as part of an individual collection showcasing causes Ben & Jerry's has been prevented from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Dispute Between Creators and Parent Company
This latest announcement intensifies the continuing tension among the world-famous ice cream maker with its corporate parent, the British packaged goods giant that has owned Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
Both founders have claimed how the parent company along with its ice cream arm Magnum improperly prevented their company against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
Watermelon Sorbet as an Emblem for Solidarity
The entrepreneur revealed via social media how he is creating an innovative watermelon-based frozen dessert, requesting public suggestions for the product's name plus additional components.
“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder stated in a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-based ice cream that calls for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians and calls for addressing the harm that was done there.”
The watermelon has become a symbol for support for the Palestinian people because of its colors, which closely resemble the colors in Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.
Historical Social Engagement and Current Changes
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of its products in territories under Israeli control, leading to the parent company transferring the Israeli operation to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing ongoing distribution within disputed territories.
This upcoming product line is being developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious dessert company that was first created in 2016 for endorsing ex- political contender Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Return".
Management Changes and Upcoming Intentions
Mr. Cohen stated how he plans to develop other ice cream flavors focusing on issues which Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking about openly by corporate restrictions.
This development comes after partner Jerry Greenfield resigned his position at the company recently, after decades of involvement, mentioning concerns that its independence had been undermined after corporate moves to curb its social activism.
At that time, Mr. Cohen stated how "Jerry has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was deeply distressing him."
"My heart compels me to keep working inside the company to fight for corporate autonomy so that it can fulfill its ethical purpose, the values which established its foundation and has maintained for decades," he explained to media outlets.
