The Lions of Teranga's Rising Talent Camara: From Dreams to Tournament Favorites.

As I enter the room, the young midfielder picks up a football he won’t let go of until after the conversation. It’s a powerful symbol for a ambition he has always held onto. “I only wanted football; my mind was set on nothing else,” states the Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His determination and natural ability convinced teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the most difficult person to convince didn't come from a sporting director or manager, it was from his dad. “He was against me playing soccer simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.

Surmounting Early Hurdles

Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” he received his dad's approval to pursue his path in the sport. Another challenge was his modest frame, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from offering him a contract.

However, the famed academy – the institution that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following Camara was named the MVP in a regional tournament, the scouts were “astonished” to learn he was without a contract. They moved fast. “They took me straight to the academy. They didn’t want me from going back home,” he recalled.

A Landmark Year and Continental Breakthrough

This move set him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he played in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his nation to the title and being named player of the tournament.

Soon after, he was unveiled as Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” states the 21-year-old. He resides by himself in Europe, a choice his relatives support to maintain his concentration.

Inspiration and Playing Style

Distractions are not really a problem for Camara, who looks up to Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and exceptional skills. Additionally, he's a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and accuracy from set pieces are notable assets. Camara confesses a need to temper his competitive fire, having been sent off at the start of his tenures at each French club. “It's a trait that is following me!” he jokes.

Life at Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Ambitions

With his current club, he values the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” Camara noted.

Right now, his focus is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England on their soil…,” he states, referencing a historic 3-1 victory in Nottingham.

Regarding a transfer to the English top flight, he is focused on Monaco for now. “I feel really at ease here,” he insists. He is frequently ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about winning the senior Africa Player of the Year down the line.

“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country… it instills confidence.”

Moving forward, Lamine Camara combines a modest start, unwavering focus, and big dreams targeting to lead Senegal to continental glory and forge his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
