The Showrunner Reveals He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... For Now.

Vince Gilligan never anticipated that Pluribus would turn into a massive hit. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

As the debut season of the acclaimed sci-fi show wrapping up—and Season 2 officially in the works—the writers' room reflected on the fan response and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.

On the Tremendous Fan Response

One could easily to get swayed by the widespread acclaim and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise.

“The experience is akin to an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being in a state of bliss,” he says. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's on purpose. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a deep trap I know I would disappear down and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The most practical strategy is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.

“It is not our goal to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not impacted by audience chatter.”

“Better to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan concludes.

The Central Mystery: Does the creator Know the Finale of Pluribus?

So if the writers aren’t being guided by audience theories, does that mean they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… with some caveats.

“We have some compelling concepts about the ultimate destination,” he states. “however, we remain prepared to discard a solid concept for a superior concept. That philosophy has guided us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we get a better idea and I expect we'll continue doing that.”

On the other hand, if all else fails, Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to fall back on.

“I constantly suggest that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”

Alternatively, why mess with the iconic TV endings?

“My dream is Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.

Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV.
